From a coster at a restaurant or an event guide from a conference, hang on to creative objects. When the time is right, pull them out while brainstorming on you next project.

22. Review Past Projects

Did you miss any opportunities to develop or articulate the brands message to its audience. In retrospect can you use anything to help you on current projects.

23. Take A Twenty Four Hour Computer Break

No Photoshop. No Email. No Facebook. No Twitter. Not even a last look at your current project.

24. Form A Sketching Habit

Use your spare time, TV time, and waiting time to induce skills and creativity by sketching.

25. Hire A Creative Coach

A creative coach can help you clarify your goals and develop a strategy towards reaching them.

Well I hope these ideas help you create more ideas.

Rick Harris

Brickle Thumb

design@bricklethumb.com

Posted via email from Brickle Thumb's posterous

Inspiring ideas doesn't come easy, day 4.

Hello World,

Here is day 4 of inspiring ways to develop creative ideas.

16. Take Hold Of Everyday Objects And Look For Inspiration

Look differently at your mouse or mouse pad. Take you pen cup and empty it out, turn it upside down and look inside. Challenge yourself to discover something new about everyday objects.

17. Play Board Games

Having fun promotes bonding and helps you recapture awe and wonder.

18. Pick Three Brands That Seem Like Opposites

Then spend 20 minutes listing as many similarities between them as you can.

19. Experiment With Different Software

Do you always work in InDesign? Take on a real challenge, open Illustrator for your next project.

20. Create A Critique Group

Find other creative thinkers and get together once a month and share, discuss, and assess favorite work from each person in the group.

Rick Harris

Brickle Thumb

design@bricklethumb.com

Posted via email from Brickle Thumb's posterous

Inspiring ideas doesn't come easy, day 3.

Hello World,

Here is day 3 of inspiring ways to develop creative ideas.

11. Teach The Future

Find a young group to teach, even if it's not related to design or your primary job, you will practice explaining concepts in a way that's clear and inviting. This will produce a skill to brush up on your client.

12. Create Your Dream Professional Biography

Then work backward to see what you need to do right now to put yourself on the path to making it come true.

13. Find A Mentor

Find someone whose work you admire or who simply excels in a single area where you would like to expand your skills.

14. Buy New Supplies

Update your work area with a new stockpile of basics supplies.

15. Make Creativity Your Habit

Touch bases with a hands on creative project. Work on a rough layout or brush up your sketching skills.

RIck Harris

Brickle Thumb

design@bricklethumb.com

Posted via email from Brickle Thumb's posterous

Inspiring ideas doesn't come easy, day 2.

Hello world,

Here is day 2 of inspiring ways to develop creative ideas.

6. Take On A Project That's Completely Different From Your Weekly Work

By doing this you will develop a fresh perspective to your regular work.

7. Open A Novel In The Middle And Read The First Three Pages

Then guess the main plot of the book and make predictions about what is going to happen to the main characters.

8. Find A Colleague To Share Goals With

Keep up with each other twice a week concerning your creative aspirations and how you will achieve them. Accountability is key when your goals are not being completed.

9. Change Your Daily Routine

Breaking up your daily routine will introduce new influences into your life. Take the bus to work or turn your TV off and read a book.

10. Search For Inspiration In The Least Likely Places

Take a walk on a nature trail. Go bird watching. Visit your local museum. Shake up your visual intake in order to produce unorthodox ideas.

Rick Harris

Brickle Thumb

design@bricklethumb.com

Posted via email from Brickle Thumb's posterous

Inspiring ideas doesn't come easy.

Hello World

While reading Steven Johnson's latest book Where Good Ideas Come From, I have been thrown into a chasm of scientific assertions with more concentration on his belief system/world view than the actual question, where do good ideas come from? I agree with Johnson's proclamation that the creation of good ideas have a lot to do with your environment, therefore we will use this entire week to produce 25 inspiring practical and environmental methods to produce ideas. We will give 5 methods a day. Of course the methods will concentrate on professional designers but they can be used for any job in any professional industry.

Have fun, here is day 1.

1. Change The Scenery

When you feel lost or if you encounter the white art board of blankness, pack up your tools and head to the zoo, the park, the corner coffee shop or the nearest body of water. An environmental relocation might be more than enough to shake things up to produce creativity.

2. Question Your Presumption Concerning Your Profession

Does this project have to be structured the same as the last one? Is there flexibility in the client's budget? Is the target audience exactly the same? I agree with Johnson's proclamation that the creation of good ideas have a lot to do with your environment, therefore we will use this entire week to produce 25 inspiring practical and environmental methods to produce ideas. We will give 5 methods a day. Of course the methods will concentrate on professional designers but they can be used for any job in any professional industry.

Have fun, here is day 1.

1. Change The Scenery

When you feel lost or if you encounter the white art board of blankness, pack up your tools and head to the zoo, the park, the corner coffee shop or the nearest body of water. So the employees of his moving company learn not only how to pack trucks but also how to unpack the contents of the human heart. "You don't know what kind of stress someone is dealing with," says O'Toole, an Irish immigrant who is imposing of stature and soft of speech. "Diagnosed with a terrible illness. Death in the family. Divorce. You have to be able to read your customer. You see what they need, and you give it to them." O'Toole's concern for service has helped him build a $27 million business with 300 employees in eight states. Read the full story.
—Leigh Buchanan

Bobby Flam, 65
Jumbo's Restaurant
Miami

Flam, the owner of Jumbo's Restaurant, has been bucking the decline of his northwest Miami neighborhood through 44 years of race riots, hurricanes, and the exodus of most other white business owners, who were once his daytime clientele. "I stayed because I wanted to be an example that business could succeed here," says Flam, who has been a neighborhood force since he quit college in 1967 to take over Jumbo's from his ailing father. He quickly closed a room off the kitchen where black customers had come for takeout and opened the dining room to all, becoming one of the first South Florida restaurants to integrate. "I treated all my customers and employees with respect. I hoped other businesses would do the same." Read the full story.
—Leigh Buchanan

Robbie Vitrano, 47
Trumpet
New Orleans

Robbie Vitrano has trouble defining what he does for a living, but look almost anywhere in his hometown of New Orleans, and you will find his footprint. It’s there at the Icehouse, a 12,000-square-foot, $1.5 million commercial real estate development in the once-flooded Seventh Ward. The building is owned by and serves as the headquarters for Trumpet, Vitrano's branding agency. Across town is Vitrano's macrobiotic fast-food joint, Naked Pizza, which has six franchise locations and plans to open about 75 to 100 more. His flashy website, 24Nola.com, designed to prove New Orleans was still very much alive, 24 hours a day. Read the full story.
—Issie Lapowsky

Chris Anderson, 53
TED
New York City

For four days each spring, about 1,500 of the world’s deepest thinkers gather in Long Beach, California, for the annual TED Conference, at which they discuss the ideas and technologies that will change the world. But since the first TED Conference, in 1984, the only people privy to this unusually diverse exchange of ideas were those who were lucky enough to be invited to the event. Chris Anderson changed that. Since 2001, his mission has been to infuse TED with what he calls radical openness. In 2006 TED began broadcasting the talks online for free. "We suddenly have this global laboratory in the skill of spreading ideas," he says. Read the full story.
—Issie Lapowsky

Jessica Mah, 20
inDinero
Mountain View, California

Before graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, at 19, Jessica Mah and a friend, Andy Su, began working on inDinero, a website that helps small businesses to keep track of finances. Mah had already started several small businesses. In June, inDinero entered Graham's Y Combinator mentoring program, and Mah took her product live just one month later. By September, she had closed a $1.2 million angel investment round. Today, inDinero has seven employees and 6,000 customers. "Jessica is a machine," Graham says. "She's going to win at whatever game she plays." Read the full story http://www.inc.com/magazine/20101201/indinero-fixes-money-management.html
—Max Chafkin

Just my thoughts

Rick Harris of

Brickle Thumb Design Works

design@bricklethumb.com

www.bricklethumb.com

Posted via email from Brickle Thumb's posterous

AT&T's First African American History Calendar for Alabama

I had the honor of designing the first AT&T African American History Calendar for Alabama. It was a joy and honor to work on a wonderful project that features such essential people throughout History, especially in the state that I call home. There was a lot of behind the scenes research and time that was put into selecting the information and honorees for the calendar, and with that in mind, the design process was just as detailed. The project took over three months to complete with extensive reviews from many board members along the way. In the end, I would say this project has been one of my most favorite pieces.

You can download the calendar here: http://alafricanamerican.com/index.php

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Rick Harris, Jr.

Brickle Thumb Design Works

www.bricklethumb.com

There are hundreds of Design firms to choose from, some firms will design a logo for organizations within hours, others will take weeks or months. The question about cookie cutter firms is not whether this type of firm is a good fit for your organization, the question is which firm will solve your problem and or do the job right. A cookie cutter firm is a design firm that will provide you with a pretty image very quickly, when I say quickly, I mean within 24 hours. This is attractive because of the quick return but it could be devastating to the life of your organization's brand. You can tell which firms are "cookie cutter" firms by immediatley viewing their home page. If they offer to create your brand in 24-48 hours for $50-$300, you can gurantee you are going to get what you paid for! I use to work for a company like this and we created at the least 250 logo concepts per day. Its was like a third world sweat shop. What I'm presenting is a right and wrong way to design. Yes, there is a right and wrong way to design, as with most things in life there are rules, and the application of these rules are essential to the life of a brand. Creativity is totally different than design, creativity has no boundaries but in order for creativity to be productive it has to be structured through design. The Number one reason we buy anything is because it was designed for a detailed reason and or advertised to and for a specific audience. If your designer can not orally define the principles of design correctly, chances are your logo design will be incorrect as well. There are many other variables that apply to the success of design such as your target audience, competitors, industry, etc. But the most important visual factor is well thought through designs that take longer than one day- if we're all being honest with ourselves. The point is that it takes time and effort to develop a successful logo, yet alone an identity or a brand. But don't just take my word for it. Check out this book: Really Good Logos Explained.

Please don't waste you money with cookie cutter logo design firms.

If your going to waste that kind of money and time, Try fishing, its more relaxing

According to sources, the ban will impact all forms of screen film, including completely clear film, anti-glare film, and mirrored film, regardless of whether the purpose of the film is protective, decorative, or both.
The reason for the removal of film-based screen protectors is currently unknown, although speculation centers around the company looking to reduce the perception that such protectors are a necessity because the devices' screens are not sufficiently durable. Another theory involves high return rates for the products due to difficulties with blemishes and air bubbles introduced by users as they attempt to adhere the products to their devices.
Macworld claims that the ban even extends beyond screen protectors to include protectors and cushions designed to adhere to palm rest areas on Apple's notebook computers. Apple has yet to respond to either publication with comment on the reports.

http://digg.com/apple/Apple_Banning_Screen_Protectors_in_Retail_Stores

Brickle Thumb Design Works

design@bricklethumb.com

www.bricklethumb.com

Posted via email from Brickle Thumb's posterous

MY REAL LIFE SUPER HERO!

> MY REAL LIFE SUPER HERO!
>
> I would like to introduce everyone to my real life super hero! Now > he doesn't leap tall buildings or fly-oh no...my Super Hero is much > better than that!
>
> He wakes up before the sun, turns to a chapter in the bible and > reads out loud to his sleeping boys and wife. He is the owner of his > own business and through his consistent dedication he has been > blessed to have his children raised at home.
>
> He manages to have business meetings and conference calls and teach > his two year old son to swing for the fences! He is the worlds > fastest diaper changer, never forgetting the powder (with the > cornstarch I must add) and King of the Car Seats!
>
> He has never missed a doctors appointment or a baseball practice. He > cuts his mothers grass on a regular basis. He is a chauffeur to his > wife just so they can spend those rare extra minutes together. He > is his own professor as he teaches himself the new trends of his > industry. He is an excellent student-always reading books and > listening to podcasts as he prepares himself to be a defender of the > Christian Faith.
>
> He is ready to make a bottle at 2 am if you need him, or listen and > give advice when you need it the most!
>
> In case you haven't noticed Rick my Super Hero is you! I look at my > life and realize I could have never made it this far on my own. I > can't do it without you and I am lucky to have you. I am blessed to > have you as my real life Super Hero!
>
> You are a wonderful Father and a beautiful husband. Look in the > mirror-and see what I see! Don't ever doubt yourself or what God has > blessed you with. Everything has a season. Continue with your dreams > and help create that legacy that will continue on with your children!
>
> You have already succeeded in so many ways, and I am right behind > you as you continue through this journey!
>
> Thank you for being my SUPER HERO!!!

Posted via email These truths are:

the sanctity of human life

the dignity of marriage as the conjugal union of husband and wife

the rights of conscience and religious liberty.

Inasmuch as these truths are foundational to human dignity and the well-being of society, they are inviolable and non-negotiable. Because they are increasingly under assault from powerful forces in our culture, we are compelled today to speak out forcefully in their defense, and to commit ourselves to honoring them fully no matter what pressures are brought upon us and our institutions to abandon or compromise them. We make this commitment not as partisans of any political group but as followers of Jesus Christ, the crucified and risen Lord, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

296326 signatures in support
...and growing!
Sign the Declaration »

Brickle Thumb Design Works

design@bricklethumb.com

www.bricklethumb.com

Posted via email from Brickle Thumb's posterous

PROTEGE IMAGES FLOURISHES CORPORATE WIDE!

Lynsey Weatherspoon is a native of Birmingham AL. Making her debut as a an entrepreneur in the photography industry she entrusted the creation of her Brand to Brickle Thumb LLC. With Lynsey's mother, Rhonda Weatherspoon, being her first photography teacher, she decided to name her company Protégé Images Photography. It was in dedication to the encouragement that her mom gave throughout the process of making a dream become reality. Brickle Thumb proudly created the Logo for Protege Images, that is now a recognized brand in the wedding industry.
Throughout the past two years Lynsey has managed to learn the basic and advanced techniques of 35mm, medium format, and digital photography. Lynsey's work has been featured in the Birmingham Weekly, The Birmingham Times, and other local venues. Her success has encouraged her again to redevelop her company image and expand from the wedding market to the corporate world. Focusing on photojournalism throughout the United States, she has a passion to relate to each story that she photographs and tell a story for all to see.
She has returned again to Brickle Thumb LLC. to entrust the creation of "Lynsey Weatherspoon Photography." The focus will apply more to the corporate industry as this is where the growth in photography has taken her. Lynsey will continue to take on wedding projects, however, she will be focusing more on applying her talents to larger corporate projects.
Brickle Thumb Design Works
design@bricklethumb.com
www.bricklethumb.com

Posted via email from Brickle Thumb's posterous

BRICKLE THUMB REDESIGNING SITE FOR MNP

Brickle Thumb is excited to be working with Michigan Neighborhood Partnership (MNP) to redesign the layout of their website. Hate buttons or moving parts? So does Apple, and nothing exemplifies the company's march towards a buttonless future more than this "two button" laser mouse, which has one button and no scroll wheel -- just a multitouch surface (a hard acrylic) across the top. With the Magic Mouse you're able to do familiar gestures from the Mac trackpad playbook such as two-finger swipes, but you can also do single-finger horizontal and vertical scrolling. We specialize in the positive productivity of brand strategy by means of researching, designing, and marketing.
We work directly with our clients via telephone, email, or video conference, and our favorite face to face! Our approach is unique and effective. We design, condition, steer and help our clients shepherd their brands.

Rick Harris is the Creative Architect who is behind the "thumb" organization. He specializes in the positive productivity of brand strategy for Brickle Thumb and their clients. His sole purpose in the Advertisement industry is to provide people with the best services available. He is a 27 year old husband and father who cherishes Jesus Christ, family, and art.

His vision for developing Brickle Thumb LLC came early in his Graphic Design career. Throughout the year that he was working with a particular firm (one we shall leave unnamed), he realized that most design firms claimed the "creative design" but lacked in delivering the "creative design." So many of the designers at the firm relied on revamping clip art or "borrowing" off of another design from a previous client. Rick didn't feel comfortable in an environment where not only the creative spirit was lacking, but the true honest relationship between client and designer was lost as well. Instead of searching for a company that embodied client designer relationships and true creative design, he decided to establish what is now known as Brickle Thumb LLC.

Although this is a new company, Rick is not new to the design industry. He brings a new style to the table and most of all a fresh new attitude to the Graphic Design Industry. His free hand talents allow him to create new brands and identities that are creative and inspiring. His persistence in always making sure his clients needs are met keep him a step up from his competitors. Rick works hard at keeping in tune with new ideas, trends, software and other elements that effect the branding industry. In the late 1950s, the European design world saw a revival of older sans-serif typefaces such as the German face Akzidenz Grotesk. Haas' director Hoffmann commissioned Miedinger, a former employee and freelance designer, to draw an updated sans-serif typeface to add to their line. The result was called Neue Haas Grotesk, but its name was later changed to Helvetica, derived from Helvetia, the Latin name for Switzerland, when Haas' German parent companies Stempel and Linotype began marketing the font internationally in 1961.

Introduced amidst a wave of popularity of Swiss design, and fueled by advertising agencies selling this new design style to their clients, Helvetica quickly appeared in corporate logos, signage for transportation systems, fine art prints, and myriad other uses worldwide. Inclusion of the font in home computer systems such as the Apple Macintosh in 1984 only further cemented its ubiquity. text by swiss dots Ltd

Is God Great?

Is God Great? will pit these two authors and spokes-persons against each other in what is sure to be a lively debate.

Born in Ireland, Professor John Lennox is a highly praised Christian apologist and mathematician who speaks widely on the relationship between science and faith. As a newcomer in the photography industry they needed
a strong and simple logo that would not only stand out above the
competition, but would be easily recognizable for potential clients.
Since they are in the business of capturing memorable moments
for their clients, we wanted to create that same memorable service.

After researching the competition we noted that most businesses
in this field rely on the image of a "camera" to get the point across
that they are a photography company. For Protege Images we
decided to play off of the word "images" in their company name
and incorporate this as the main concept in the logo. When our
client viewed their logo we knew we hit a Homerun when it was
approved in the first round!
